CLEAR Coaching Model: A Structured Approach to Leadership Coaching


In the world of coaching, the CLEAR Coaching Model stands out as a structured yet flexible approach to help leaders empower their teams. Developed by Peter Hawkins, CLEAR is an acronym for five key stages that guide the coaching process; Contracting, Listening, Exploring, Action, and Review. Let us break it down for more clarity.

  1. Contract: This initial stage sets the foundation for the coaching session. Both the coach and coachee agree on goals, desired outcomes, and the boundaries of the conversation. It is about creating clarity and setting expectations to ensure that both parties are aligned.

  2. Listen: At this stage, the focus is on active listening. The coach listens without interruption to fully understand the coachee’s perspective, challenges, and feelings. It is a critical step in building trust and creating an open dialogue that encourages the coachee to express themselves freely.

  3. Explore: Here, the coach and coachee explore potential options, ideas, and challenges together. The coach asks powerful questions to help the coachee reflect, dig deeper into the root causes of the issue, and consider different perspectives. This phase often leads to new insights and realizations.

  4. Action: Once the coachee has explored their options, it is time to set an action plan. This stage focuses on identifying specific, practical steps that the coachee can take to move forward. The coach helps the coachee develop a clear and achievable action plan, ensuring that it aligns with the goals established in the Contracting phase.

  5. Review: This is the final stage, where both the coach and coachee reflect on the progress made and assess the effectiveness of the action steps. This stage is crucial for learning and improvement, as it provides an opportunity to adjust the approach if needed and celebrate successes along the way.

The CLEAR Coaching Model offers a structured approach to leadership coaching that can help individuals navigate challenges and achieve their goals more effectively. By following these five stages, leaders can foster greater personal and professional growth within their teams.
